All-Time Favourite Compact Natives for Small Hedges, Borders and Topiary
Description:
Westringia ‘Naringa’ PBR is one of the best-performing medium-sized native hedging plants, valued for its dense, upright growth and soft lavender-purple flowers. Naturally tidy and fast-growing, ‘Naringa’ responds beautifully to regular pruning, making it ideal for formal hedges, screens, or feature planting in both native and modern landscapes.
Flowers:
Masses of soft lavender-purple flowers appear mainly in spring and summer, with spot flowering year-round in ideal conditions. The blooms add seasonal colour and attract bees and beneficial insects.
Foliage:
Fine, narrow, dark green foliage covers the plant densely from top to base, providing excellent year-round screening and structure.
Fruit:
Not a significant feature.
Form & Size:
Upright, bushy shrub growing approximately 1.5–2.2m high and 1–1.5m wide. Responds well to shaping into hedges or formal screens.
Growing Conditions:
Position: Thrives in full sun to part shade.
Soil: Tolerates a wide range of well-drained soils, including sandy, loamy, and clay types.
Climate: Drought, frost, and coastal tolerant once established.
Watering: Low water requirement once established. Deep water occasionally in extended dry periods.
Uses:
Perfect for formal hedging, screening, and feature planting.

Excellent choice for coastal or wind-exposed sites.
Bird and pollinator-friendly.
Companion Plants:
Pairs well with Callistemon ‘Better John’, Lomandra ‘Lime Tuff’, Grevillea ‘Pink Surprise’, and Dianella ‘Little Jess’ for a layered, water-wise planting design.
