Fittonia Flammule
Description
Fittonia Flammule, commonly known as the Nerve Plant, is a low-growing, spreading evergreen perennial known for its striking foliage. The leaves are dark green with vibrant red veins, giving it a mosaic appearance that adds a splash of color to any indoor space.
Flowers
Small, inconspicuous white or yellowish flowers may appear, but they are not the main attraction of this plant.
Foliage
The leaves are the highlight of Fittonia Flammule. They are oval-shaped, about 3-10 cm long, with a distinctive network of red veins against a dark green background, creating a dramatic and eye-catching contrast.
Fruit
Not significant; the plant is primarily grown for its foliage.
Form and Size
Fittonia Flammule is a compact, low-growing plant that typically reaches about 10-15 cm in height and spreads up to 30 cm. Its creeping habit makes it ideal for ground cover in terrariums or as an attractive addition to a dish garden.
Growing Conditions
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, while too little light can cause the vibrant colors to fade.
- Water: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Fittonia is sensitive to both overwatering and underwatering.
- Humidity: High humidity is essential for this tropical plant. Regular misting or a humidifier can help maintain adequate humidity levels.
- Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 18-24°C. Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
Uses
Fittonia Flammule is perfect for adding a touch of color to indoor spaces. It is commonly used in:
- Terrariums
- Dish gardens
- As a ground cover in shaded garden areas
- Indoor plant displays
Maintenance
- Pruning: Regularly pinch back the stems to promote bushier growth and prevent legginess.
- Repotting: Repot in spring if the plant outgrows its container. Use a well-draining potting mix.
- Pests: Watch out for common indoor pests like spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Notes
Fittonia Flammule is non-toxic to pets, making it a safe choice for households with animals. Its vibrant foliage and low-maintenance nature make it a popular choice among indoor plant enthusiasts.
