Banksia 'Birthday Candles' is one of Australia's most popular dwarf native shrubs, prized for its compact growth, spectacular golden flower spikes and outstanding bird-attracting qualities. This hardy evergreen shrub forms a dense, spreading mound, making it perfect for smaller gardens, coastal landscapes, rockeries, borders and containers. Its long flowering season and low-maintenance nature make it an excellent choice for adding year-round colour and supporting local wildlife.
Flowers
Brilliant golden-yellow flower spikes with contrasting red styles are produced from autumn through winter, often continuing into early spring. The nectar-rich flowers attract honeyeaters, bees and other beneficial pollinators.
Foliage
Dense, evergreen foliage with narrow, dark green leaves creates an attractive compact shrub throughout the year.
Fruit
Woody seed cones develop after flowering and remain on the plant, adding ornamental interest and providing habitat for wildlife.

Growing Conditions
Sun: Full sun to part shade
Soil: Well-drained sandy or loamy soils. Prefers slightly acidic, free-draining soil.
Water: Water regularly during establishment, then only during prolonged dry periods.
Frost: Moderate frost tolerant.
Wind: Excellent tolerance of coastal winds and salt spray.
Climate: Well suited to coastal, subtropical, temperate and Mediterranean climates throughout Australia.

Maintenance
Requires very little maintenance once established. Light pruning after flowering will encourage dense new growth and maintain its compact shape. Use only low-phosphorus fertilisers formulated for Australian native plants.

Where are our plants Grown and how do we grow them
- Plants are grown locally on the Sunshine Coast
- All outdoor plants are sun hardened and ready to grow
- Indoor plants are grown under 50% Shade and will transfer perfectly to indoor use
- Orchids are also grown under 50% Shade and are best brought indoors during flowering for show then returned back into a shaded area until the following flowering time

How to Look after your plants like we do
- When using any Garden Care products or Fertilisers we always recommend reading the label before use
- We recommend using Earthlife crushed rock mineral on all plants when planting in the ground or in Pots.
- When planting in Pots in Our garden centre we use Rocky Point potting mixes to plant all our plants
- If planting in the ground we also recommend that you use Rocky Point garden soil around your plants at the time of planting
