Top 10 Must-Have Tropical Plants for Queensland Gardens
Canopy™ Lagerstroemia spp. (CM02) Intended
Description:
Lagerstroemia Canopy™ 'Intended' is a compact, deciduous crepe myrtle variety selected for its attractive canopy shape, prolific flowering, and disease resistance. This cultivar is part of the Canopy™ series, known for its strong structure and vibrant blooms, making it an excellent choice for gardens, streetscapes, and landscape projects. The tree's moderate size and ornamental features ensure year-round interest.
Flowers:
In mid to late summer, Canopy™ 'Intended' produces large clusters of vibrant pink to magenta flowers that cover the branches. These blooms attract bees and butterflies, adding color and life to the garden. The flowers are long-lasting and provide a stunning display throughout the warm months.
Foliage:
The tree features glossy, dark green leaves that provide a lush canopy through spring and summer. In autumn, the foliage turns shades of orange, red, and yellow, adding a burst of seasonal color before the leaves drop.
Fruit:
After flowering, the tree may produce small, round seed capsules that persist into winter. These seed pods add subtle interest and provide food for birds, though they are not a primary ornamental feature.
Form and Size:
Canopy™ 'Intended' has a rounded, upright form with a dense canopy. It typically reaches a height of 4 to 5 meters with a similar spread, making it ideal for small to medium-sized gardens, streetscapes, and urban plantings where space is limited.
Growing Conditions:
This crepe myrtle thrives in full sun and prefers well-draining soil, though it is adaptable to a range of soil types, including clay and sandy soils. It is moderately drought-tolerant once established but benefits from regular watering during extended dry periods. The tree is highly resistant to powdery mildew and other common crepe myrtle diseases.
Uses:
Canopy™ 'Intended' is perfect as a feature tree, in mixed borders, or as a street tree in urban landscapes. Its compact size, vibrant flowers, and disease resistance make it an excellent choice for low-maintenance gardens, patios, and courtyards. It also works well in mass plantings for seasonal color displays.
Maintenance:
This variety is relatively low-maintenance. Light pruning in late winter helps shape the tree and remove any dead or crossing branches. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to encourage healthy growth and abundant blooms. Mulching around the base helps retain soil moisture and protect the roots.
Notes:
Canopy™ 'Intended' is valued for its vibrant summer blooms, compact form, and disease resistance. It’s a versatile choice for both residential and commercial landscapes, providing a long-lasting display of color and texture.
Companion Plants:
Pairs well with other sun-loving shrubs and perennials like Lavender, Salvia, and Rudbeckia. It also complements ornamental grasses and ground covers like Liriope and Sedum, creating a vibrant, layered garden bed.
