Top 10 Must-Have Tropical Plants for Queensland Gardens
Carex Feather falls 'PBR'
Description:
Carex 'Feather Falls' is a hardy, evergreen ornamental grass-like sedge known for its elegant, arching foliage and striking variegation. This cultivar is admired for its cascading habit and ease of care, making it an excellent choice for garden borders, mass plantings, and containers. Its compact form and year-round appeal bring texture and color to both sun and shade gardens.
Flowers:
In late spring to early summer, 'Feather Falls' produces small, inconspicuous brown flower spikes. While not a primary ornamental feature, these delicate flowers add subtle interest when in bloom.
Foliage:
The plant features long, arching leaves with bold, creamy-white margins and a rich green center. The variegated foliage maintains its color throughout the year, adding brightness and contrast to garden beds, borders, or containers. The cascading habit of the leaves gives it a soft, flowing appearance.
Form and Size:
'Feather Falls' has a clumping, mounded growth habit with gracefully arching leaves. It typically reaches a height of 30 to 40 cm and spreads to about 50 to 60 cm, making it suitable for ground covers, edging, and mixed container displays.
Growing Conditions:
This sedge thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-draining soil enriched with organic matter. It is tolerant of a range of soil types, including clay and sandy soils. Feather Falls is drought-tolerant once established but benefits from regular watering during extended dry periods. It can also tolerate wet soil conditions, making it a versatile option for various garden settings.
Uses:
Ideal for use as a ground cover, in mass plantings, or as an accent plant in mixed borders. Its compact size and cascading foliage make it perfect for containers, hanging baskets, and along pathways. It works well in rock gardens and near water features where its arching leaves can spill gracefully over edges.
Maintenance:
This variety is low-maintenance, requiring minimal care once established. Trim back old or damaged foliage in early spring to encourage fresh growth. It is generally pest and disease-resistant, making it a trouble-free addition to gardens. Applying a balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring can promote lush, vibrant growth.
Notes:
Feather Falls is valued for its adaptability, year-round color, and versatility in both sun and shade. Its compact size and elegant form make it an excellent choice for small spaces and container gardens. The plant is also deer-resistant, making it suitable for gardens where deer browsing is a concern.
Companion Plants:
Pairs well with other low-growing, shade-tolerant perennials like Hostas, Heuchera, and Ferns. It also complements flowering plants like Astilbes and Geraniums, providing texture and contrast in mixed borders.
