Top 10 Must-Have Tropical Plants for Queensland Gardens
Dichondra repens
Description:
Dichondra repens, commonly known as Kidney Weed or Lawn Leaf, is a low-growing, evergreen ground cover with small, round, kidney-shaped leaves. This hardy plant is popular for creating lush, dense carpets in gardens, lawns, or between pavers. Its spreading habit and ability to tolerate foot traffic make it a versatile choice for ground cover, especially in shaded or partially shaded areas.
Flowers:
In spring and early summer, Dichondra repens produces tiny, inconspicuous greenish-yellow flowers. These blooms are subtle and not a primary feature, blending seamlessly into the dense foliage.
Foliage:
The plant features small, rounded leaves that resemble tiny lily pads. The foliage is bright green, forming a thick, mat-like cover that remains lush year-round. Its dense growth habit helps suppress weeds, making it a popular choice for low-maintenance landscapes.
Form and Size:
Dichondra repens has a prostrate, creeping growth habit, typically growing to a height of 2 to 5 cm. It spreads rapidly, covering large areas and creating a soft, green carpet. Its low profile makes it ideal for ground cover, especially in areas where a traditional lawn may be challenging to maintain.
Growing Conditions:
This plant thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-draining soil. It can tolerate a range of soil types, including sandy and clay soils. Dichondra repens is drought-tolerant once established but will benefit from occasional watering during prolonged dry periods to maintain its lush appearance. It is also tolerant of light frost and can handle mild foot traffic.
Uses:
Ideal for use as a ground cover, between stepping stones, or as a lawn alternative in areas where mowing is difficult. Dichondra repens is perfect for shaded gardens, under trees, or in areas where grass struggles to grow. It also works well in containers and hanging baskets, where its trailing habit can be showcased.
Maintenance:
This plant is relatively low-maintenance and does not require mowing unless a very tidy appearance is desired. Trim back occasionally to control its spread and maintain a uniform look. It can benefit from a light application of a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring to encourage dense growth. Regular watering is recommended during dry spells, particularly in full sun.
Notes:
Dichondra repens is valued for its versatility, lush foliage, and ability to tolerate light foot traffic. It is an excellent choice for water-wise gardens and low-maintenance landscapes, especially in shaded or difficult areas where grass may not thrive.
Companion Plants:
Pairs well with other low-growing, shade-tolerant plants like Hostas, Ferns, and Ajuga. It also complements ground covers like Liriope and Sedum, adding texture and variety to garden beds.
