Top 10 Must-Have Tropical Plants for Queensland Gardens
Evolvulos Pillosus Blue
Description
Evolvulus pilosus ‘Blue’, commonly known as Blue Daze, is a low-growing, spreading perennial plant admired for its vibrant blue flowers and silvery-green foliage. This plant is a popular choice for garden beds, borders, hanging baskets, and ground cover due to its continuous blooming and attractive appearance.
Flowers
Blue Daze produces an abundance of small, sky-blue flowers with a white or yellow center. The flowers bloom profusely from spring through fall, attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies to the garden.
Foliage
The foliage of Evolvulus pilosus ‘Blue’ consists of small, oval-shaped leaves covered with fine hairs, giving them a silvery-green appearance. The dense foliage forms a neat, mat-like ground cover that enhances the plant’s ornamental value.
Form and Size
Blue Daze typically grows to a height of 15-30 cm with a spread of 60-90 cm. It has a low, spreading habit that makes it ideal for use as a ground cover or in cascading arrangements in containers and hanging baskets.
Growing Conditions
- Soil: Prefers well-drained, sandy to loamy soils. It is tolerant of poor soil conditions but performs best in fertile, well-draining soil.
- Sunlight: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. Full sun exposure encourages more prolific flowering.
- Water: Requires moderate watering. It is somewhat drought-tolerant once established but benefits from regular watering during dry periods.
- Climate: Suitable for warm, temperate, and subtropical climates. It can tolerate light frosts but should be protected from severe cold.
Uses
- Ground Cover: Ideal for use as a ground cover, providing a dense, colorful carpet that suppresses weeds and adds visual interest.
- Hanging Baskets: Perfect for hanging baskets, where its trailing stems can cascade over the edges, creating a stunning display.
- Containers: Works well in mixed containers as a spiller plant, complementing upright and bushy plants with its spreading habit.
- Landscaping: Used in garden beds, borders, rock gardens, and along pathways to add texture and color contrast.
Maintenance
- Pruning: Minimal pruning required. Trim back stems as needed to control growth and encourage bushier growth.
- Fertilizing: Benefits from occasional feeding with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer during the growing season.
- Pest and Disease: Generally pest-resistant but can be susceptible to root rot in poorly drained soils. Ensure good drainage to prevent issues.
Notes
Blue Daze is a low-maintenance and versatile plant that adds a splash of vibrant blue to any garden or landscape. Its continuous blooming and spreading habit make it a standout choice for various planting applications.
