10 of Our Favourite Grevilleas for Sunshine Coast Gardens
Festuca glauca 'Beyond Blue' is a striking, compact ornamental grass prized for its intense powder-blue foliage and naturally rounded, mounding growth habit. This beautiful evergreen perennial forms dense cushions of fine, arching leaves, creating outstanding colour and texture in garden beds, borders, rockeries and decorative pots.
Unlike many traditional Blue Fescue varieties, 'Beyond Blue' has been selected for its strong blue foliage colour, improved vigour and attractive appearance throughout the seasons. Its distinctive silvery-blue leaves provide a beautiful contrast against green foliage, flowering shrubs, natural stone and contemporary landscaping materials.
Growing approximately 30 cm high and 40 cm wide, Festuca 'Beyond Blue' is ideal for mass planting, pathway edging, decorative borders and low-maintenance garden designs. Its compact shape makes it particularly effective when planted in groups, creating a flowing display of soft blue mounds.
With good drought and frost tolerance once established, this ornamental grass is an attractive choice for sunny, well-drained gardens. In Sunshine Coast and South East Queensland conditions, excellent drainage and good airflow are especially important during hot, humid weather.
Festuca 'Beyond Blue' produces slender flower stems carrying delicate, feathery seed heads during late spring and summer.
The flowers emerge in subtle greenish tones before maturing to soft beige or straw colours, rising above the blue foliage and adding gentle movement to the garden.
Although the flowers provide seasonal interest, the plant is primarily grown for its outstanding foliage colour and compact shape.
The foliage consists of exceptionally fine, narrow, arching leaves with an intense powder-blue to silvery-blue appearance.
Individual leaves emerge from a dense central clump, gradually forming a neat, rounded mound with a soft, cushion-like texture.
The distinctive blue colouring generally remains attractive throughout the year in suitable growing conditions, although prolonged humidity, excessive moisture or environmental stress may affect foliage quality.
Height: Approximately 30 cm.
Width: Approximately 40 cm.
Growth Habit: Compact, evergreen, clump-forming ornamental grass with a dense, rounded appearance.
Growth Rate: Moderate under suitable growing conditions.
Planting Spacing: Approximately 35–45 cm apart for borders and mass planting.
'Beyond Blue' maintains a naturally tidy shape without regular pruning, making it particularly suitable for formal edging and contemporary landscaping.
Position: Full sun to partial shade. Best foliage colour and compact growth are generally achieved in full sun, although some protection from intense afternoon heat can be beneficial in warmer climates.
Soil: Prefers well-drained sandy, loamy or gravelly soils. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soils and areas where moisture remains around the crown.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, the plant has good drought tolerance, although occasional watering during extended dry periods helps maintain healthy foliage.
Climate: Suitable for temperate gardens and well-drained subtropical garden positions. In humid Sunshine Coast conditions, choose an open, airy location with excellent drainage.
Frost Tolerance: Good frost tolerance once established.
Coastal Tolerance: Suitable for many coastal garden situations, particularly where drainage is good and exposure is not excessively harsh.
Humidity: Good airflow is important, as prolonged hot, humid conditions can cause foliage deterioration and reduce the lifespan of Blue Fescue.
Garden Borders: Create attractive edging along pathways, driveways and garden beds with compact mounds of powder-blue foliage.
Mass Planting: Plant in groups to create a striking display of blue foliage and soft, rounded textures.
Contemporary Gardens: The distinctive blue colouring contrasts beautifully with architectural plants, gravel, concrete and modern landscaping materials.
Rock Gardens: Ideal for well-drained rockeries and gravel gardens where its compact shape complements natural stone.
Decorative Pots: An excellent choice for outdoor containers, particularly when combined with contrasting foliage or flowering plants.
Coastal Gardens: Adds colour and texture to suitable coastal landscapes with well-drained soil.
Low-Maintenance Gardens: Its naturally compact growth habit requires minimal trimming and relatively little watering once established.
Cottage Gardens: Provides attractive foliage contrast among flowering perennials, lavender and ornamental shrubs.
Festuca 'Beyond Blue' is relatively low maintenance when grown in suitable conditions.
Watering: Maintain regular moisture during establishment, allowing the soil to drain between watering. Avoid prolonged waterlogging.
Fertilising: Apply a light application of balanced, slow-release fertiliser during spring if required. Excessive fertilising is unnecessary.
Pruning: Remove dead or damaged foliage during late winter or early spring. Gently combing through the clump can help maintain its tidy appearance. Avoid cutting heavily into the crown.
Flower Removal: Spent flower stems can be trimmed after flowering if a neater appearance is preferred.
Division: Older clumps may benefit from division or replacement if the centre becomes sparse or loses vigour.
General Care: Maintain good airflow, avoid excessive mulch around the crown and ensure excellent drainage, particularly during wet summer conditions.
Festuca glauca 'Beyond Blue' is particularly valued for its intense blue foliage, which provides year-round ornamental interest in suitable garden conditions.
Its compact, mounding shape makes it an excellent choice for creating repeated patterns in garden borders and mass plantings.
Although it has good drought tolerance, 'Beyond Blue' performs best when its roots are not subjected to prolonged waterlogging. In subtropical gardens, raised beds, gravel gardens and well-drained containers can provide more favourable growing conditions.
Unlike spreading lawn grasses, Festuca 'Beyond Blue' forms individual clumps and is not intended for use as a conventional lawn or high-traffic groundcover.
Lavender: Complements the silvery-blue foliage while creating a Mediterranean-style garden appearance.
Westringia: Provides contrasting green or grey-green foliage in coastal and low-maintenance gardens.
Dianella: Creates attractive combinations of strappy foliage and contrasting plant forms.
Lomandra: Provides upright, arching foliage that contrasts with the compact blue mounds.
Salvia: Adds colourful flowers and seasonal interest alongside the fine-textured grass.
Euphorbia 'Ascot Rainbow': The variegated foliage provides striking colour contrast against the powder-blue Festuca.
Sedum: Suitable for combining with Festuca in sunny, well-drained rock gardens and decorative pots.
