Why It’s a Great Idea to Plant in Winter
Description:
Grevillea ‘Carpet Layer’ is a tough, fast-spreading groundcover grevillea ideal for suppressing weeds, stabilising banks, and creating dense, bird-friendly coverage. With its fine, feathery foliage and rich red spider flowers, it adds vibrant colour and texture to native and water-wise gardens. This low-maintenance variety thrives in a range of conditions and provides excellent ground-hugging coverage year-round.
Flowers:
Clusters of red spider-style flowers appear mainly in winter and spring, with spot flowering possible year-round in warmer climates. The blooms are rich in nectar and attract birds, bees, and butterflies.
Foliage:
Fine, deeply divided green foliage forms a dense mat that hugs the ground. The foliage is soft to touch and adds delicate texture to open spaces and sloping sites.
Fruit:
Occasional seed capsules may form after flowering, though not a major ornamental feature.
Form & Size:
Low, spreading groundcover growing approximately 20–30cm high and up to 2–3m wide. Ideal for large areas or cascading over retaining walls.
Growing Conditions:
Position: Best in full sun but will tolerate light shade.
Soil: Prefers well-drained soils; tolerates sandy, loamy, and gravelly types.
Climate: Suitable for most Australian climates. Drought, frost, and coastal tolerant once established.
Watering: Very low water requirements once established. Water deeply during extended dry periods.
Uses:
Ideal for mass planting, embankments, and erosion control.
Excellent for weed suppression and covering bare areas.
Suitable for native gardens, low-maintenance landscapes, and wildlife-friendly designs.
Maintenance:
Extremely low-maintenance.
Light tip-pruning can help encourage denser growth and additional flowering.
Feed with a low-phosphorus native fertiliser in spring if needed.
Notes:
Attracts nectar-feeding birds and pollinators.
Effective natural mulch layer that cools the soil and reduces evaporation.
A reliable groundcover in harsh, dry environments.
Companion Plants:
Pairs well with Lomandra ‘Tanika’, Callistemon ‘Green John’, Westringia ‘Low Horizon’, and other low-growing native shrubs for a layered, water-wise design.
