Why It’s a Great Idea to Plant in Winter
Description:
Grevillea ‘Gaudi Chaudii’ is a robust, spreading groundcover grevillea bred from Grevillea acanthifolia and G. laurifolia. Known for its vigorous growth and dense, trailing habit, it forms a mat of coarse, attractive foliage and displays rich red and pink toothbrush-style flowers through much of the year. This hardy cultivar is excellent for large embankments, erosion control, and native garden displays.
Flowers:
Showy toothbrush-shaped flowers in vivid red to pink tones appear mainly from winter to spring, with spot flowering at other times. The blooms are nectar-rich and attract honeyeaters, bees, and other pollinators.
Foliage:
Broad, leathery green leaves with a textured surface and a slightly toothed margin. The foliage creates a lush, weed-suppressing carpet and adds bold texture to the landscape.
Fruit:
Produces small woody seed capsules typical of grevilleas, though they are not a major ornamental feature.
Form and Size:
Spreading groundcover shrub that grows 30–60 cm high and up to 3 metres wide. It forms a dense mat, ideal for mass planting or erosion-prone areas.
Growing Conditions:
Prefers full sun to part shade and well-drained soils. Drought-tolerant once established and can handle light frost. Avoid waterlogged sites. Suitable for coastal and inland climates.
Uses:
Ideal for groundcover, embankments, roadside plantings, large-scale native landscapes, and wildlife-attracting gardens. Provides excellent soil stabilisation and weed suppression.
Maintenance:
Low-maintenance. Trim lightly after flowering to maintain density and encourage new growth. Fertilise in spring with a low-phosphorus native fertiliser. Mulch to improve moisture retention.
Notes:
This cultivar is fast-growing and adaptable, perfect for covering large open spaces. Regular pruning helps keep it compact and tidy.
Companion Plants:
Pairs well with Lomandra ‘Tanika’, Myoporum parvifolium, Callistemon ‘Green John’, and Hardenbergia ‘Happy Wanderer’.
