Why It’s a Great Idea to Plant in Winter
Description:
Grevillea ‘Little Drummer Boy’ is a compact, fine-leafed selection of the woolly grevillea (Grevillea lanigera), prized for its neat, low-growing habit and charming pink and cream flowers. This variety is an ideal groundcover or border plant in native, coastal, or waterwise gardens. It offers excellent texture, year-round foliage appeal, and reliable performance in a wide range of conditions.
Flowers:
Clusters of delicate pink and cream spider-style flowers are produced in abundance from winter through spring, with spot flowering at other times. The blooms are highly attractive to nectar-feeding birds and native pollinators.
Foliage:
Fine, needle-like grey-green foliage gives the plant a soft and textured appearance. The dense evergreen habit helps suppress weeds and makes it ideal for low-maintenance areas.
Fruit:
May produce small woody seed capsules typical of grevilleas, but they are not a key feature of the plant.
Form and Size:
Low and spreading groundcover shrub, growing approximately 30–50 cm high and 1 to 1.5 metres wide. Forms a tidy mat of foliage and flowers.
Growing Conditions:
Thrives in full sun to part shade in well-drained soil. Very tolerant of drought, coastal conditions, and light frost once established. Suitable for a wide range of soil types including sandy or gravelly soils.
Uses:
Ideal for borders, native garden beds, rockeries, retaining walls, and embankments. Perfect for attracting wildlife and softening hard edges in landscaping. Also suitable for container growing in courtyards or patios.
Maintenance:
Very low-maintenance. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and promote bushiness. Fertilise in spring with a low-phosphorus native fertiliser. Mulch to conserve moisture and discourage weeds.
Notes:
A tough and charming small grevillea that performs well in difficult sites. Its compact habit and extended flowering make it a favourite for small gardens and native landscaping projects.
Companion Plants:
Looks great alongside Myoporum parvifolium, Scaevola ‘Mauve Clusters’, Lomandra ‘Little Pal’, and Leptospermum ‘Fore Shore’.
