Why It’s a Great Idea to Plant in Winter
Description:
Grevillea ‘Old Gold’ is a compact, low-growing native shrub admired for its dense, spreading habit, golden-green foliage, and rich red spider-style flowers. This hybrid combines the toughness of Grevillea juniperina with the distinctive leaf shape of Grevillea ilicifolia, resulting in a hardy, attractive plant suited to a wide range of garden settings. Its tidy growth and bird-attracting flowers make it ideal for borders, rockeries, and native landscapes.
Flowers:
Produces deep red spider-like flowers throughout much of the year, with flowering peaks in late winter to spring. The blooms are rich in nectar and highly attractive to honeyeaters and other pollinators.
Foliage:
Dense, holly-like foliage with golden-green tones, creating year-round interest and a natural contrast to the vivid flowers. The foliage is evergreen and forms a compact mat, making it ideal for weed suppression and soil coverage.
Fruit:
Typical woody grevillea seed capsules may develop after flowering but are not considered ornamental.
Form and Size:
Low-growing and spreading shrub, typically reaching around 30–60 cm high and up to 1.5 metres wide. Excellent for mass planting or low edging.
Growing Conditions:
Prefers full sun to light shade and thrives in well-drained soils. Very drought-tolerant once established and tolerates light frost. Suitable for coastal gardens and dry inland conditions.
Uses:
Ideal for native groundcovers, borders, embankments, rockeries, or as a low-maintenance filler in wildlife gardens. A good option for suppressing weeds and reducing maintenance in larger areas.
Maintenance:
Minimal care required. Prune lightly after flowering to encourage compact growth and repeat blooming. Apply a low-phosphorus native fertiliser annually in spring. Mulch to retain moisture and reduce weed growth.
Notes:
A tough, resilient plant that performs well in a wide range of conditions. Excellent for habitat gardens, particularly in dry or low-water zones.
Companion Plants:
Works well with Lomandra ‘Little Pal’, Callistemon ‘Green John’, Westringia ‘Zena’, and Myoporum parvifolium.
