Why It’s a Great Idea to Plant in Winter
Description:
Grevillea ‘Orange Marmalade’ is a striking, fast-growing Australian native shrub known for its vibrant orange flowers and bold, tropical-looking foliage. A hybrid variety bred for performance and appeal, it provides colour, bird-attracting blooms, and strong structure in both native and mixed gardens. Its vigorous habit and reliable flowering make it a standout feature shrub or informal screen.
Flowers:
Bright orange toothbrush-style flowers appear year-round, with peak displays in spring and autumn. The nectar-rich blooms are highly attractive to birds, especially honeyeaters, as well as beneficial pollinators.
Foliage:
Large, glossy, deeply divided green leaves create a lush and almost tropical appearance. The foliage provides excellent contrast to finer-leaved plants and remains dense and evergreen throughout the year.
Fruit:
Woody seed capsules may form after flowering but are not an ornamental feature.
Form and Size:
Medium to large rounded shrub, typically growing 2 to 3 metres high and wide. Naturally dense and bushy with a robust structure.
Growing Conditions:
Best grown in full sun to part shade in well-drained soil. Drought-tolerant once established and will also tolerate light frost. Avoid heavy or poorly draining soils. Suitable for coastal conditions.
Uses:
Ideal as a feature shrub, screening plant, or background in native gardens. Excellent for bird-attracting plantings, informal hedges, and large mixed borders. Its bold colour and foliage add drama to the garden.
Maintenance:
Low-maintenance once established. Prune after flowering to maintain a compact habit and encourage further blooming. Feed in spring with a low-phosphorus native fertiliser. Mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
Notes:
A standout grevillea for its vibrant colour and lush form. Can be shaped if required but performs well with minimal attention. Best flowering in full sun.
Companion Plants:
Pairs well with Banksia robur, Callistemon ‘Little John’, Melaleuca ‘Mini Mel’, and Lomandra ‘Lime Tuff’.
