Why It’s a Great Idea to Plant in Winter
Description:
Grevillea ‘Raptor’ is a striking hybrid grevillea featuring a vigorous, upright habit, bold coppery-bronze new growth, and dense green foliage. Bred from Grevillea aurifolia and Copper Rocket, this cultivar combines ornamental appeal with outstanding hardiness, making it ideal for screens, feature planting, and wildlife gardens. Its year-round presence and vibrant tones bring strong contrast and colour to Australian landscapes.
Flowers:
Clusters of soft apricot-pink to light orange spider flowers appear throughout the year, with flowering peaks in late winter through spring. The blooms are nectar-rich and attract birds and pollinators, adding movement and sound to the garden.
Foliage:
Dense green foliage with attractive reddish-bronze tones on new growth. The leaves are broad and slightly toothed, offering a lush, structural appearance that contrasts well with fine-leaved natives.
Fruit:
Typical grevillea seed capsules may develop after flowering but are not a prominent feature.
Form and Size:
A large, upright shrub with a spreading crown, typically growing 2.5 to 3 metres high and 2 to 2.5 metres wide. It forms a dense screen and can be pruned to maintain shape or size.
Growing Conditions:
Best in full sun to part shade with well-drained soil. Drought-tolerant once established and will handle light frost and coastal conditions. Avoid heavy or poorly draining sites.
Uses:
Ideal for use as a tall informal hedge, privacy screen, or feature shrub in native gardens. Also suitable for bird-attracting landscapes, larger garden beds, and mixed borders. Its upright habit makes it a strong visual anchor in the landscape.
Maintenance:
Low maintenance once established. Prune after flowering to maintain a compact, dense shape. Apply a low-phosphorus native fertiliser in spring. Mulch well to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
Notes:
‘Raptor’ is a protected variety (PBR) bred for its vibrant foliage colour, upright form, and extended flowering. An excellent performer in low-maintenance or habitat-friendly gardens.
Companion Plants:
Combines well with Callistemon ‘Mr Foster’, Banksia spinulosa, Westringia ‘Mundi’, and Lomandra ‘Lime Tuff’.
