Why It’s a Great Idea to Plant in Winter
Description:
Grevillea ‘Red Hooks’ is a vigorous, fast-growing evergreen shrub known for its striking red and gold toothbrush-style flowers and deeply lobed foliage. Originally bred in Australia, this hybrid is valued for its hardiness, bird-attracting blooms, and adaptability to a wide range of garden conditions. It makes an excellent feature shrub or informal screen in both native and mixed planting schemes.
Flowers:
Bright red flowers with golden undertones appear in toothbrush-like clusters, primarily from late winter through spring, with spot flowering at other times. The blooms are highly attractive to nectar-feeding birds such as honeyeaters.
Foliage:
Distinctive grey-green foliage with long, deeply serrated, almost oak-like leaves adds strong textural contrast. The leaves are evergreen and offer year-round interest in the landscape.
Fruit:
Woody seed capsules may form but are not a notable ornamental feature.
Form and Size:
A large, sprawling shrub with an informal habit, typically reaching 2–3 metres high and 2–4 metres wide. Can be pruned to maintain shape or size.
Growing Conditions:
Performs best in full sun to part shade and prefers well-drained soil. Drought-tolerant once established and adaptable to coastal conditions and light frost. Avoid heavy or poorly draining soils.
Uses:
Excellent for wildlife gardens, screening, large informal hedges, or as a backdrop in native gardens. Its bold flowers and foliage also make it a good choice for feature planting in open areas.
Maintenance:
Low maintenance. Prune after flowering to encourage dense growth and repeat blooming. Fertilise annually with a low-phosphorus native fertiliser. Mulch well to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Notes:
A reliable, long-flowering grevillea that adds colour and movement to the garden. Especially suited to large spaces where its natural spread can be appreciated.
Companion Plants:
Combines well with Banksia spinulosa, Callistemon ‘Prolific’, Lomandra ‘Verday’, and Melaleuca ‘Claret Tops’.
