Why It’s a Great Idea to Plant in Winter
Description:
Grevillea ‘Yamba Sunshine’ is a hardy, compact native shrub celebrated for its vibrant yellow spider-like flowers and finely textured green foliage. This fast-growing variety adds a bright, cheerful presence to any garden and is well suited to coastal areas, native gardens, and low-maintenance landscapes. Its compact habit and extended flowering season make it a reliable performer year-round.
Flowers:
Produces masses of vivid yellow spider-style flowers throughout most of the year, peaking in spring and autumn. The blooms are rich in nectar, attracting birds, bees, and butterflies to the garden.
Foliage:
Fine, mid-green foliage with a soft, lacy appearance. The foliage provides a delicate texture that contrasts beautifully with bolder native species and blends well in naturalistic settings.
Fruit:
Woody seed capsules typical of grevilleas may appear after flowering but are not a prominent feature.
Form and Size:
Compact and rounded in shape, typically growing to around 1.2 metres high and 1.5 metres wide.
Growing Conditions:
Thrives in full sun to light shade and prefers well-drained soils. Tolerant of coastal conditions, light frost, and dry periods once established. Best flowering is achieved in full sun with minimal pruning.
Uses:
Ideal for native gardens, coastal plantings, low hedging, mixed borders, and wildlife-friendly landscapes. Its compact size makes it suitable for small gardens and larger containers.
Maintenance:
Low-maintenance once established. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage further blooming. Apply a slow-release low-phosphorus native fertiliser in spring for best results.
Notes:
A bird-attracting favourite with extended flowering. Performs particularly well in subtropical and coastal climates. Mulch well to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
Companion Plants:
Pairs well with other sun-loving natives such as Callistemon ‘Green John’, Westringia ‘Zena’, Leptospermum ‘Lemon Frost’, and Lomandra ‘Tanika’.
