Why It’s a Great Idea to Plant in Winter
Leucospermum ‘Carnival® Red’ is a spectacular, long-flowering shrub that delivers bold colour and a tropical feel to gardens year-round. Renowned for its large, pincushion-style blooms in vivid red, this hardy Proteaceae variety is ideal for feature planting, cut flower use, and coastal or low-water landscapes. Its striking form and intense colour make it a standout in any garden setting.
Flowers:
Large, rounded pincushion flowers in vibrant red appear from late winter through spring, often continuing sporadically into summer. Flowers are nectar-rich, attracting birds and pollinators, and have a long vase life when cut.
Foliage:
Attractive grey-green leaves are leathery and evergreen, providing a clean backdrop to the bright blooms. Dense growth gives it a tidy, rounded appearance.
Fruit:
Woody seed capsules form after flowering, typical of the Proteaceae family.
Form and Size:
Upright, rounded shrub growing approximately 1.5–2m high x 1.5–2m wide.
Growing Conditions:
Thrives in full sun in well-drained, slightly acidic soils. Tolerates light frost and coastal exposure. Once established, it is drought tolerant and requires minimal watering. Avoid planting in heavy clay or poorly drained soils.
Uses:
Perfect as a feature plant, in mixed native garden beds, or as a low-maintenance shrub in coastal and drought-prone landscapes. Popular for cut flower production.
Maintenance:
Low maintenance. Lightly prune after flowering to maintain shape and promote strong new growth. Feed with a low-phosphorus native fertiliser in spring.
Notes:
Part of the Carnival® series bred for compact growth, vivid colour, and high flower production. Excellent for attracting nectar-feeding birds.
Companion Plants:
Works beautifully with other Proteaceae species such as Grevillea, Banksia, and Leucadendron, as well as ornamental grasses and succulents.
