Why It’s a Great Idea to Plant in Winter
Description:
Melaleuca armillaris ‘Pink’ is a hardy, upright native shrub selected for its soft, feathery green foliage and flushes of soft pink bottlebrush-style flowers. Naturally slender in habit, it is ideal for screening, hedging, or feature planting in larger native landscapes. Tough and low-maintenance, this variety performs well in coastal conditions, windy sites, and dry gardens.
Flowers:
Clusters of small, soft pink bottlebrush-style flowers appear in spring and summer. The blooms are lightly scented and provide seasonal interest, attracting bees and other pollinators.
Foliage:
Fine, soft, feathery green foliage provides year-round texture and creates a soft, flowing appearance in the landscape. New growth is bright green, adding contrast to mature foliage.
Fruit:
Woody seed capsules may form after flowering, adding texture to the stems.
Form & Size:
Tall, narrow shrub growing approximately 2.5–3.5m high and 1.5–2m wide. Naturally upright and bushy, ideal for screening.
Growing Conditions:
Position: Prefers full sun but tolerates light shade.
Soil: Grows in most well-drained soils, including sandy and clay types.
Climate: Drought, coastal, and light frost-tolerant once established.
Watering: Low water requirements once established. Water occasionally in prolonged dry spells.
Uses:
Excellent for screening, windbreaks, or feature planting.
Suitable for coastal and exposed sites.
Ideal for wildlife-friendly and low-maintenance native gardens.
Maintenance:
Low-maintenance and adaptable.
Light pruning after flowering helps maintain density and encourage bushiness.
Feed with a low-phosphorus native fertiliser in spring if required.
Notes:
Tough, fast-growing screening plant.
Attracts pollinators and beneficial insects.
Excellent for coastal and windy locations.
Companion Plants:
Pairs well with Callistemon ‘Endeavour’, Grevillea ‘Loopy Lou’, Lomandra ‘Tanika’, and Westringia ‘Naringa’ for a bird-friendly, wind-tolerant native screen.
