Why It’s a Great Idea to Plant in Winter
Description:
Melaleuca ‘Little Rita’ is a charming compact native shrub known for its fine, silvery-green foliage and showy purple-pink bottlebrush-style flowers. Its naturally tidy, rounded form and soft texture make it ideal for borders, mass planting, or low hedging. Fast-growing and drought-tolerant once established, this low-maintenance variety brings a gentle burst of colour and texture to native and modern garden designs.
Flowers:
Masses of fluffy purple-pink flowers bloom throughout spring and summer, with occasional spot flowering in warmer months. The nectar-rich blooms attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
Foliage:
Soft, fine, grey-green foliage creates a dense, bushy shape. The fine leaves provide year-round colour and texture, softening hard edges in the landscape.
Fruit:
Small woody seed capsules may appear after flowering, typical of Melaleuca species.
Form & Size:
Compact, rounded shrub growing approximately 50–70cm high and 70–90cm wide. Maintains a tidy shape with minimal pruning.
Growing Conditions:
Position: Thrives in full sun to part shade.
Soil: Well-drained soils including sandy and loamy types. Adapts to a range of soil conditions.
Climate: Suited to most climates, including coastal, frost, and drought-prone areas.
Watering: Low water needs once established. Water occasionally during extended dry periods.
Uses:
Ideal for borders, low hedging, and native garden beds.
Excellent for mass planting, rockeries, or softening hardscapes.
Suitable for small gardens and containers.
Maintenance:
Very low-maintenance.
Light pruning after flowering encourages bushiness and shape.
Apply a slow-release native fertiliser in spring if needed.
Notes:
Hardy and reliable under tough conditions.
Great for bird and pollinator-friendly gardens.
Dense form provides weed suppression and ground coverage.
Companion Plants:
Pairs well with Lomandra ‘Lime Tuff’, Westringia ‘Zena’, Callistemon ‘Little John’, and Grevillea ‘Strawberry Pops’ for a colourful and cohesive low-maintenance planting scheme.
