Flowers

Flowering is rare when grown indoors. Mature plants may occasionally produce a small cream-coloured spathe and spadix typical of Philodendrons, although the foliage is the main ornamental feature.

Foliage

Glossy, oval-shaped leaves emerge deep green before gradually developing distinctive creamy-white to pale yellow pinstripe variegation as they mature. The contrast between the dark foliage and fine striping creates a sophisticated tropical display throughout the year.

Fruit is extremely rare on indoor-grown plants and has little ornamental value.

Growing Conditions

Water: Water when the top few centimetres of soil become dry. Avoid overwatering and do not allow the plant to sit in water.

Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity but adapts well to typical indoor conditions.

Maintenance

Feed every 6–8 weeks during spring and summer with a quality indoor plant fertiliser. Wipe leaves occasionally to remove dust and maintain their natural shine. Repot every few years as the plant becomes root-bound and remove any damaged or ageing foliage as required.

Notes

Philodendron 'Birkin' is believed to be a naturally occurring mutation of Philodendron 'Rojo Congo'. Its distinctive white striping develops as the leaves mature, meaning each new leaf brings its own unique pattern. Its manageable size and architectural appearance make it one of the most popular indoor foliage plants available.

Caution: Like most Philodendrons, all parts of the plant are considered toxic if ingested by pets or people.
