All-Time Favourite Compact Natives for Small Hedges, Borders and Topiary
Description:
Viburnum odoratissimum ‘Quick Fence’ PBR is a fast-growing, dense-foliaged screening shrub ideal for creating privacy, windbreaks, or green backdrops in residential and commercial landscapes. This improved cultivar has been selected for its vigorous growth habit, tighter branching, and lush glossy foliage, making it an exceptional choice for formal or informal hedging.
Flowers:
Clusters of small, creamy-white flowers appear in spring and early summer. Lightly fragrant, the blooms add a seasonal highlight and may be followed by small red berries that mature to black.
Foliage:
Large, glossy, deep green leaves provide year-round colour and form a dense, lush screen. New growth is bright green and adds contrast and vibrancy to the shrub.
Fruit:
Occasional small red berries may appear after flowering, turning black as they mature. Not generally a major ornamental feature.
Form & Size:
Upright, fast-growing shrub reaching approximately 2.5–3m high and 1.5–2m wide, depending on pruning. Forms a dense screen with minimal gaps when regularly trimmed.
Growing Conditions:
Position: Prefers full sun to part shade.
Soil: Grows well in most well-drained soils, including sandy, loamy, and clay types.
Climate: Thrives in subtropical and warm temperate climates. Tolerates humidity, coastal exposure, and light frost.
Watering: Moderate water needs. Water regularly during establishment, then deep water during extended dry periods.
Uses:
Excellent for hedging, screening, and boundary planting.
Suitable for formal or informal garden designs.
Works well in larger pots for patio or courtyard screening.
Maintenance:
Responds well to regular pruning to maintain a dense, tidy shape.
Trim 2–3 times a year for a formal hedge.
Apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring and mulch well to conserve moisture.
Notes:
One of the best Viburnum options for fast results and full coverage.
Can be shaped to suit a range of hedge heights.
Bird-friendly and easy to maintain once established.
Companion Plants:
Pairs well with Murraya paniculata, Syzygium ‘Cascade’, Trachelospermum jasminoides, and Gardenia ‘Florida’ for lush screening and fragrant garden designs.
