Gardenia ‘Florida’ is a classic evergreen shrub prized for its beautifully fragrant, double white flowers and lush, glossy dark green foliage. Compact, dense and naturally rounded, it is an excellent choice for low hedging, garden borders, feature planting and pots. Its exceptional fragrance makes it particularly well suited to planting near patios, entertaining areas, pathways and entrances where the perfume can be enjoyed.
Flowers
Produces highly fragrant, double white flowers that gradually develop creamy tones as they age. Flowering generally begins in late spring and continues through summer, with flowering often extending into autumn in warm climates.
Foliage
Glossy, deep green evergreen foliage provides attractive year-round colour. The dense leaves create a lush appearance and contrast beautifully against the brilliant white flowers.
Fruit
Fruit is generally insignificant and this variety is primarily grown for its highly fragrant flowers and attractive evergreen foliage.
Form & Size
Compact, dense and rounded evergreen shrub.
Height: 1–1.2 m
Width: Approximately 1 m
Growing Conditions
Position: Full sun to part shade. In hot climates, protection from harsh afternoon sun can be beneficial.
Soil: Prefers rich, slightly acidic, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter.
Water: Keep consistently moist during establishment and throughout warmer weather, particularly while flowering. Avoid waterlogged conditions.
Frost: Protect from heavy frost, particularly when young.
Wind: Prefers a sheltered position protected from strong or drying winds.
Climate: Well suited to warm subtropical conditions including South East Queensland. Mulching around the root zone helps retain moisture and keeps the shallow root system cool.
Uses
Ideal for low hedging, borders, feature planting, formal gardens, cottage gardens, scented gardens and containers. Excellent near patios, windows, entrances and outdoor entertaining areas where its beautiful fragrance can be appreciated.
Maintenance
Water regularly during warmer weather and apply a suitable Gardenia or acid-loving plant fertiliser during the growing season. Mulch well to retain moisture and keep the root zone cool. Lightly prune after flowering to maintain a dense, compact shape and encourage fresh growth. Watch for common Gardenia pests such as scale, aphids and whitefly.
