Why It’s a Great Idea to Plant in Winter
Description:
Purple Pixie™ Loropetalum is a low-growing, cascading shrub prized for its vibrant year-round burgundy-purple foliage and stunning display of vivid pink fringe-like flowers. Its weeping, trailing habit makes it ideal for groundcover use, spilling over retaining walls, or softening the edges of garden beds and containers. Compact and easy to maintain, it brings bold colour contrast and texture to any landscape.
Flowers:
Produces bright, hot-pink, tassel-like flowers mainly in spring, with spot flowering throughout the warmer months.
Foliage:
Features rich burgundy to deep purple foliage year-round, adding a dramatic and consistent colour accent to gardens and mixed plantings.
Fruit:
Not typically noted for fruiting.
Form and Size:
A low, mounding to trailing groundcover form. Grows to approximately 30–40 cm high and spreads up to 1.2 metres wide.
Growing Conditions:
Thrives in full sun to part shade. Prefers well-drained soil and is adaptable to a range of soil types. Drought-tolerant once established and frost-hardy in most regions of Australia.
Uses:
Perfect for use as a groundcover, in rockeries, mass plantings, low-maintenance borders, spillover for raised beds or retaining walls, and in decorative pots and hanging baskets.
Maintenance:
Low-maintenance. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage denser growth. Feed with a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring.
Notes:
Provides excellent contrast when planted with lime or golden foliage plants. Its tidy, non-invasive habit and pest resistance make it a dependable garden performer.
Companion Plants:
Pairs well with plants like Acacia 'Limelight', Nandina domestica Moon Bay, Carex 'Feather Falls', Liriope muscari, or Dianella Little Jess™ for a colourful and textural garden composition.
