Top 10 Must-Have Tropical Plants for Queensland Gardens
Description
Metrosideros 'Little Ewan' is a compact, evergreen shrub prized for its attractive foliage and striking flowers. This low-growing form of Metrosideros excels as a dense groundcover or low hedge, making it perfect for coastal gardens and exposed sites. The plant features small, rounded, grey-green leaves with a slightly silver appearance, providing year-round interest. Its tidy, mounding habit makes it well-suited for modern landscapes and smaller garden spaces.
Flowers
Clusters of bright red, brush-like flowers appear mainly in spring and summer, with spot flowering possible at other times. The vibrant flowers are rich in nectar and attract birds, bees, and butterflies to the garden.
Foliage
Small, rounded, leathery leaves are grey-green with a silvery underside, creating a soft and appealing texture. The foliage is dense, forming a neat and compact shrub that responds well to clipping.
Fruit
Small, inconspicuous seed capsules may follow the flowers but are not a notable feature.
Form and Size
Naturally compact and dense, forming a low, mounding shrub. Grows approximately 60cm high x 1m wide, making it ideal for borders, edging, and container planting.
Growing Conditions
Prefers full sun to part shade and thrives in well-drained soils. Highly tolerant of coastal conditions, including salt spray and strong winds. Drought hardy once established, but appreciates occasional watering during extended dry periods. Avoid heavy or waterlogged soils.
Uses
Excellent as a low hedge, groundcover, or feature plant in coastal and low-maintenance gardens. Great for containers, retaining walls, and rockeries. Also ideal for native gardens and bird-friendly landscapes due to its nectar-rich flowers.
Maintenance
Low maintenance. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain a neat shape and encourage bushy growth. Fertilise with a slow-release native fertiliser in spring if needed.
Notes
A great choice for windy, coastal sites where other plants may struggle. Its compact form makes it easy to manage in small gardens or formal settings.
Companion Plants
Pairs well with other coastal and native plants such as Westringia 'Mundi', Leptospermum 'Fore Shore', Banksia 'Birthday Candles', and Lomandra 'Tanika' for textural contrast and year-round interest.
